Vol. 266 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Hauliers.

7.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the number of Irish road hauliers who will be allowed to operate in the nine EEC countries; and the numbers from the nine who will be allowed to operate in Ireland.

No Irish hauliers are permitted to carry from point to point within any of the other EEC member states and no hauliers from these states are permitted to carry from point to point in this country.

International road transport for reward is for the most part governed by bilateral agreements between the member states and we are at present negotiating bilateral agreements with a number of member states.

The Community have instituted a system of Community licences authorising multilateral transport between member states. The scheme which is intended to be expanded in the future covers only 3 per cent of international road haulage for reward in the Community. The scheme provides for 1,584 licences at present of which Ireland has been allocated 23. The adequacy of the allocations made to the three new member states is at present under discussion by the Community institutions.

I do not think the Minister has exactly answered the question put down. Is it intended that these large trucks will be allowed to run on Irish roads? I understand there is some problem about this.

There is. No decision has been reached yet about it.
