Vol. 266 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imported Food Standards.

21.

asked the Minister for Health is he is satisfied that imported food products pass hygiene tests of proper standards; and if any officers of his Department are involved in such tests.

The Food Hygiene Regulations, 1950-71 contain detailed provisions directed towards the exercise of health control measures in relation to the importation of foodstuffs. These provisions are enforced by authorised officers who are mainly the health inspectors of health boards and veterinary officers of the sanitary authorities. Officers of my Department are not directly involved in the enforcement of regulations.

I have no information which might suggest that these controls are not operating effectively and satisfactorily.
