Vol. 266 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Social Welfare Requirements.

41.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will confirm that social welfare arrangements which he may introduce will comply with EEC requirements.

The requirements relating to social welfare services arising from membership of the European Communities are kept under constant review to ensure that our legislation, both existing and proposed, complies with them. In so far as can be foreseen, the wide range of improvements in social welfare services to be introduced on foot of legislation presented to the House this year will not in any way conflict with EEC requirements.

Does the Minister know that social welfare systems in the EEC countries are different?

That is so.

There is no such thing as harmonisation.

Not as yet.
