Vol. 266 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Corporation Titles.

80.

asked the Minister for Local Government if the reports of the various committees of the Dublin City Council Commissioners are addressed to The Right Honourable the Lord Mayor. Aldermen and Burgesses of Dublin; and, if so, if he will lay down a more suitable form of address.

The answer to the first part of this Question is " yes ". The legal title of the corporate body known as Dublin Corporation, prescribed by the Municipal Corporations (Ireland) Act, 1840, is "The Right Honourable the Lord Mayor, Aldermen and Burgesses of Dublin " and must be used on all legal documents of the corporation. The removal of the members of the city council from office and the appointment of commissioners in their place does not affect the title of the corporation. Legislation would be required to change the title.

Will you do it?

I would ask the Parliamentary Secretary to consider changing this "Right Honourable" business. It should have gone long ago. It is never too late to change.

I have no plans to change the title at the moment.

The Minister or the Parliamentary Secretary will be bringing in legislation soon with regard to the local elections and the re-establishment of Dublin Corporation. Would not this be a suitable opportunity to abolish this archaic terminology?

There are no proposals to do that at the moment.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary consider it?

I will consider it.
