Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing of Islanders.

13.

asked the Minister for Lands if it is intended to continue with the proposed scheme to provide assistance for the purchase of sites and the erection of houses on the mainland for islanders from Inishturk and Inishturbot, County Galway, who are anxious to be housed on the mainland; and, if so, if he will give details of the scheme.

14.

asked the Minister for Lands the amount of financial assistance which will be granted to a person (name supplied) of Tarbot Island, County Galway, to enable him to settle on the mainland.

Cavan): With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 13 and 14 together.

The Government have recently approved a scheme of assistance to enable the inhabitants of Inishturk and Inishturbot, County Galway, to move to the mainland and this scheme will be implemented as soon as practicable as announced in my statement of 25th May. The scheme provides that substantial grants and assistance will be made available by the Land Commission to the islanders towards the cost of sites, dwellinghouses and outoffices. Pending completion of discussions with the islanders and examination of the circumstances of each applicant, it is not feasible to indicate how individual cases will be treated, but the general terms of the scheme have already been conveyed to representatives of the islanders. An inspector visited Inishturk last week and explained the matter in detail; he will visit Inishturbot in the course of the next few days.
