Vol. 267 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Safety of Electrical Equipment.

31.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if the Government accepts the EEC directive on low-voltage electrical equipment particularly concerning the safety aspects of electrical appliances.

All EEC Directives are binding on member states and the question of acceptance or non-acceptance by the Government does not arise.

What I was curious about was that the voltage rating here is 220 to 250, whereas on the Continent it is 110. On account of the different voltage that is applied, would this not cause difficulty? Then there are such snags as screw-in bulbs as against stick-in ones.

The Deputy is misinformed as to the voltage on the Continent being 110. It is not as simple as that. If it were the same everywhere it would be rather simple. It is a rather patchy situation in different parts of the Community. culties in harmonisation, but the wish of the Irish trade and the manufacturing industry is that this should be implemented quickly.

Are we going to 110?

I understand not, but low voltage as it is defined in the particular directive refers to the voltage range of 50 to 1000.
