Vol. 267 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin City Unemployed.

56.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the total number of registered unemployed persons in Dublin city area; and if there are any specific proposals to provide gainful employment for the people concerned.

There are 16,554 registered as unemployed at the local employment offices in Dublin city on 29th June; this was 1,474 below the figure for the corresponding week last year.

The primary economic purpose of the budgetary policy adopted by the Government is to accelerate economic growth for the specific purpose of assisting in solving our serious unemployment problem.

The beneficial effects of this policy should be reflected in Dublin which accounts for about one-quarter of the total on the live register of unemployment in the State.

Might I ask the Minister if there are any specific proposals for industries in this city?

That question has been answered. If the Deputy would like to put down a specific question I shall be happy to answer it, but Dublin is the largest industrial aggregation in the country and the answer would be a detailed one.

I know, but there are 16,000 unemployed.

This is almost 1,500 fewer than 12 months ago.

Deputy Moore asked if there are any specific proposals to provide employment and the Minister asked him to put down a specific question. The Deputy asked a specific question.

There are 1,500 fewer unemployed as compared with last year.
