Vol. 267 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Eye Treatment.

37.

asked the Minister for Health the number of patients on the waiting list for operations for squints at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital, Dublin; and the average length of time before operation.

I have been informed by the hospital that at a recent date there were 100 children under eight years and 190 persons over eight years of age on the waiting list for operations for squint.

The waiting period for operations varies but I understand that the maximum waiting period for an operation under the age of eight years is four to five months and over the age of eight years about 12 months. Cases which are considered urgent are taken out of turn.

38.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of the long waiting lists for eye examinations and the action he proposes to take in the matter.

I am aware that the position in relation to eye examinations for eligible persons is unsatisfactory. There is excessive delay in many areas before such persons get appointments for ophthalmic examination. Officials of my Department are reviewing the situation and I hope to be in a position to announce improvements in the scheme shortly.

Has the Minister included aural and dental services in this review?

That is the subject of another question. This question is in relation to eye examinations only.

It is in relation to aural, dental and ophthalmic services.

That is Question No. 39.

I am sorry.
