Vol. 267 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Swimming Pools.

40.

asked the Minister for Local Government his policy in regard to the provision of swimming pools throughout the country; and if, in view of the extent of pollution in Irish rivers, lakes and coastal waters, he will increase the number of indoor chlorinated heated swimming pools.

While my general approach is to favour the maximum possible provision of recreational facilities for the community, including swimming pools, I am having the swimming pools programme surveyed to see what is involved, not merely in the provision of new pools, in particular, heated indoor pools, but also in their operation and the operation of those already there.

May I ask the Minister to give full consideration to a national programme rather than any sort of local or regional programme? Will there be an upper limit on the cost of any given pool so that we may have more of the smaller and more modest pools rather than a few of the large elaborate pools?

I will convey the Deputy's view to the Minister.
