Vol. 267 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Traffic Regulations.

61.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will cause a general review of road traffic regulations to be undertaken with a view to practicality and enforcement.

The need for and the effectiveness of road traffic regulations are reviewed as part of the on-going work of my Department. On the question of enforcement of these regulations, it is relevant to note that a study is on hands by An Foras Forbartha on "The Police Factor in the Enactment and Implementation of Road Traffic Legislation".

When this study is completed it will give a special opportunity for reexamining various regulations from the aspect of enforcement.

We do not need a report from An Foras Forbartha to know that there is wholesale flaunting of the road traffic regulations. We have experience of it in smaller towns such as Swords and Balbriggan. I ask the Minister to request his colleague the Minister for Local Government, to do something about it.

I will convey the remarks of the Deputy to the Minister.

Surely road traffic regulations, in view of our membership of the EEC, should be revised immediately. Our traffic regulations do not even conform with those in the Six Counties. The Minister should have a comprehensive look at this situation.

I will have the views of the Deputy conveyed to the Minister.
