The net receipt of surtax for the year 1972-73 was £4.494 million. The total number of persons effectively liable to sur-tax for that year will not be known for some time. However, for the year 1971-72, the latest estimate of the number of persons assessed to sur-tax for that year is 5,455.
The problem seems to be that we do not care how we get it so long as we get it.
