Vol. 267 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income Tax Receipts.

101.

asked the Minister for Finance the total amount of income tax collected under the PAYE system in the past year to the latest available date; the total number of persons who paid income tax by PAYE in that period; and the total amount of income tax collected other than by this method in the same period and the number of persons involved.

The total net receipt of income tax for 1972-73 was £169.2 million approximately, of which about £104.7 million was collected under PAYE. Information regarding the total number of individuals effectively liable to income tax, including PAYE, for the year 1972-73 will not be available for some time.

For the year 1971-72, however, it is estimated that approximately 700,000 individuals were effectively liable to income tax for that year and that of these about 555,000 paid tax under PAYE.
