Vol. 267 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Nature Trail Tours.

110.

asked the Minister for Finance if the Office of Public Works will provide for early morning guided educational tours for children on nature trails on State property in tourist areas.

Mr. Kenny

The answer is in the negative. It is considered that such tours can best be managed by teachers, parents or guardians with the aid of the booklet provided at each nature trail.

Is it not true that in the afternoons adults go on tours of the nature trails provided by the Office of Public Works? Would the Parliamentary Secretary not consider it a good idea to have guided tours for young people conducted in the mornings?

Mr. Kenny

Conducted by whom?

By officers of the Office of Public Works.

Mr. Kenny

I think educational matters are best left in the hands of educationalists.

During the last three or four years the Parliamentary Secretary's predecessor made special efforts to provide nature trails for young people. Is the Parliamentary Secretary now telling the House that these efforts are being discounted?

Mr. Kenny

The Parliamentary Secretary has his own ideas about education and this is not one of them.

I am calling Question No. 111.

In other words, are we to take it that the Parliamentary Secretary is not concerned about educational tours for young people?

I would ask the Deputy to allow questions to continue. Question No. 111.
