Vol. 267 No. 12

Written Answers. - Unemployment Benefit.

213.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare why an applicant (name supplied) in County Kerry was not paid unemployment benefit.

The claim for unemployment benefit by the person in question was disallowed by a decision of a deciding officer on the grounds that he lost his employment by reason of a stoppage of work which was due to a trade dispute at his place of employment. The decision of the deciding officer was upheld by an appeals officer.

214.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will increase by 50p the amount allowed to unemployed applicants under paragraph (b) (ii) (A) of Article 7 of S.I. No. 7 of 1953.

The statutory regulations in question are at present being reviewed with particular reference to the adequacy of the existing limit of 50p a day on remuneration from a subsidiary occupation.

215.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare how remuneration or profit is estimated for the operation of paragraph (b) (ii) (A) of Article 7 of S.I. No. 7 of 1953 in the case of (a) farmers, (b) non-farmers and (c) females; and if land valuation or the stock of crops are the criteria accepted.

No distinction is made in the regulations in question between claimants to unemployment benefit on an occupational or sex basis. Remuneration or profit in the case of any particular claimant is assessed on a factual basis, allowance being made for any expenses that are necessarily incurred in the course of the subsidiary occupation. The rateable valuation of land, therefore, is not taken as a criterion for farm income in this connection.
