Vol. 267 No. 12

Written Answers. - Employment of Stokers.

223.

asked the Minister for Defence why two stokers were dismissed from the corps of engineers, Curragh Camp on 1st June last and on the following Monday morning three new men were employed as general labourers.

Six men nominated by the local employment exchange were taken on by the Corps of Engineers at the Curragh Training Camp as temporary stokers for the heating season from September, 1972, to May, 1973. It was made clear to them when they were employed that the work was of a seasonal nature only. In mid-May, 1973, the employees were given advance notice in writing that the heating season was due to end and that, when it did, they would become redundant. The heating season ended on 30th May, 1973, and I regret that it was necessary to terminate their services on 1st June, 1973.

My Department is unable to trace a record of any appointment as general labourer, or in any other capacity as labourer, on Monday, 4th June, 1973. If the Deputy would give additional particulars regarding the alleged employments, I will have the matter further investigated.
