Vol. 267 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Forestry Lands.

16.

asked the Minister for Lands the acreage of land held by his Department in South Kerry for forestry planting; and if sufficient land is coming to hand to keep the afforestation programme in operation there for the next six years.

The nominal plantable reserve at State forests in the southern part of County Kerry was 3,465 acres at the end of March, 1973. A substantial portion of this area was not immediately available for planting because of amenity and other considerations.

There is no specific annual planting programme for the area but maintenance of planting for the next six years at existing levels would involve the acquisition of additional land. Agreement has been reached for the purchase of 4,281 acres in the area while further areas totalling 9,554 acres are at preliminary stages of inquiry.
