Vol. 267 No. 12

Written Answers. - US Investment in Ireland.

116.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the effect the weakness of the US dollar will have on prospective US investment in Ireland.

The dollar has shown weakness primarily in terms of Continental currencies but has remained reasonably stable in relation to the £ sterling over the past year. The overall result should not adversely affect US investment here and may marginally encourage it.

However, I would stress that industrial investment decisions are made on the basis of medium to longterm considerations and are not likely to be influenced significantly by short-term currency fluctuations.
