Vol. 268 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Income Tax Ceiling.

43.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the heavy burden of income tax at the standard rate on married couples who are both working, he considers that the £2,000 ceiling above which tax at this rate must be paid should now be raised substantially to take account of the fall in money values.

The question of any alteration in the amounts of the personal allowances and reliefs for tax purposes is a budgetary matter and the Deputy will understand that I cannot indicate at this time what next year's budget may or may not contain. I would, however, draw the Deputy's attention to the fact that in the Finance Act, 1973, the wife's earned income allowance was raised from £74 to £104 at an estimated full year cost of £850,000.
