Vol. 268 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Petrol Tax.

121.

asked the Minister for Finance the amount of tax payable to the Exchequer (a) on each gallon of petrol and (b) on each grade of petrol, allowing for any variation, and including VAT.

Mr. Kenny

99.7 per cent of the petrol consumed in this country is either home-refined or refined in Britain. In either case, the duty per gallon, irrespective of grade, is 20.75p. A higher rate of 21.17p per gallon is charged on the marginal amount imported from other sources.

VAT is also chargeable. The VAT content in the price of a gallon of petrol retailing at 36.6p, 38.1p or 39.1p, depending on the grade, is 2.31p, 2.41p and 2.48p respectively.
