asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will ensure the elimination of "wire scapes" by providing that wires be put underground.

If it is the Deputy's suggestion that all telephone wires should be put underground, I am afraid this is quite impracticable on cost grounds. It is, however, the policy of my Department to put telephone lines underground when this is not unduly costly as compared with the erection of overhead lines or cables.
