Vol. 268 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Factory Inspectorate.

9.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will consider the appointment to the factory inspectorate of additional staff who have special qualifications in the fields of industrial medicine and welfare.

It is my intention to have a medical presence attached to the industrial inspectorate.

In July last, I appointed a doctor, qualified in occupational industrial medicine, to undertake a survey of health hazards in the various areas of industrial activity. He will report to me at the end of the year on the precise nature of the problems, how they might be dealt with and what medical personnel might be required.

Could the Minister indicate how many factory inspectors of this type he has?

That seems to be a separate question.

At present we have none, but what I am encouraging is a new departure.
