Vol. 268 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Environmental Protection.

10.

asked the Minister for Lands if he has any plans to include in his Department's environmental programme items such as the conservation of wetlands and the protection of species inhabiting international waters or those which migrate to this country from other countries.

These matters are being considered in the context of pending legislation for improved measures in the sphere of wildlife conservation. Meanwhile some progress is being made within the existing statutory framework.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware of the number of migatory birds that are becoming extinct as a result of the use of chemical fertilisers?

I am fully aware of that and that is one of the reasons why the new statutory regulations are being prepared.

Would that include hawks?

Will the Government follow the lines followed in America regarding certain of these chemicals?

The experience in all countries, including America, will be taken into account.
