Vol. 269 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Council of Europe role in Environmental Matters.

46.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the Government will support the move to give the Council of Europe more authority in matters relating to the environment.

As I stated in reply to a similar question by the Deputy on 8th May, a conference of European Ministers concerned with environment held in Vienna last March made recommendations seeking to define the future work of the Council of Europe in environmental matters. These recommendations are due to be considered by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe at their next meeting early in the New Year.

The Government are prepared to envisage the maximum role for the Council of Europe in matters relating to the environment due account being taken of the work of other international bodies in this field.
