Vol. 270 No. 4

Written Answers. - Motor Insurance Report.

302.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when he expects to receive the second report of the committee on motor insurance; and when he intends to introduce new legislation on motor insurance in view of the fact that a number of young people find it impossible to secure insurance.

I am not quite clear as to the report to which the Deputy is referring. If he is referring to the Insurance Industry Committee —the committee which has already submitted an interim report on motor insurance but whose final report will deal with insurance in general—I expect to have the final report of that committee towards the end of 1974. If, on the other hand, the Deputy is referring to the Motor Premiums Advisory Committee, which was set up following on a recommendation in the interim report of the Insurance Industry Committee, I am expecting a report from that committee within a couple of months, probably about the end of March. I hope that I will receive proposals from the Motor Premiums Advisory Committee which will enable a big improvement in the immediate situation to be brought about quickly. I do not propose to consider any changes in legislation until I have received the final report of the Insurance Industry Committee.
