Vol. 270 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ice-Cream Ingredients.

48.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries when he proposes to introduce regulations requiring the use of butterfat instead of vegetable fat in products like ice-cream.

Our existing national legislation requires the use of a minimum percentage of butterfat in the manufacture of ice-cream. The European Commission have recently put forward certain proposals aimed at extending the use of butterfat in the manufacture of certain products including ice-cream but these proposals are still under consideration and will have to await the Council of Ministers' decision regarding them.
