Vol. 270 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sugar Beet Price.

49.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if the 3 per cent rise in the minimum price of sugar beet proposed by the European Commission is acceptable to him in view of the steep rise in the cost of fertiliser, fuel, machinery etc.; and, if not, the level he considers the minimum price increase should reach.

An increase of 3 per cent in the Community minimum price for beet would not offset the sharp increase that has taken place in production costs, especially in recent months. I am not prepared, however, to comment further in advance of the forthcoming discussions in the Council of Ministers.

Is the Minister trying to get a further increase for beet-growers?

Of course.

When does the Minister hope for a decision?

We hope to have a decision early in March.

Is the Minister confident about getting an increase?

I am always hopeful and confident.

I am calling Question No. 50.
