Vol. 270 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Farm Workers' Hours.

75.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is satisfied with present working hours for farm workers.

Working hours for farm workers are a matter for negotiation between them and their employers.

As the Deputy is, no doubt, aware the Agricultural Wages Board, which is an autonomous body, fixes minimum rates of wages for these workers related to the hours of work which it finds to be prevailing under contracts generally between agricultural workers and their employers. The question of extending the powers of the board to enable it to fix the weekly hours to which minimum wage rates apply is at present under consideration in consultation with the various interests involved.
