Vol. 270 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wildlife Preservation.

59.

asked the Minister for Lands if marshes and wildlife sanctuaries are threatened by technological or other developments; and, if so, the action he proposes to take in the matter.

61.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the wetlands that have been conserved as being of national importance.

(Cavan): I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to take Questions Nos. 59 and 61 together.

To date, a total of 35 wildfowl sanctuaries has been established as part of an envisaged national network. Details are contained in the Game Birds Protection Order, 1973 (S.I. No. 199 of 1973) which is available in the Library. I am arranging for a copy to be sent to the Deputy. In addition, a major sanctuary of both national and international significance, that is, the Wexford Wildfowl Reserve, has been established and was officially opened by me on 15th February, 1974.

The process of augmenting these sanctuaries and accelerating the conservation of such areas, including wetlands, which may be vulnerable to technological and other developments, will be facilitated under pending legislation.

Following the opening of the Wexford sanctuary, would the Minister consider arranging a tour of these sanctuaries for Members of the House?

(Cavan): Of the entire sanctuaries?

A tour of a number of the more important ones——

(Cavan): Certainly. A conducted tour of the entire sanctuaries would take some weeks. I will look into the situation at the sanctuaries.

If we could be brought on a tour of bogs and ESB establishments, perhaps the Minister would also bring us on a tour of his showplaces?

(Cavan): I will look into the matter.

60.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will consider further restricting the hunting season for wildfowl and waterfowl.

(Cavan): Decisions on restrictions of open seasons for wildfowl and waterfowl will be based, as heretofore, on all available relevant information, including such factors as breeding results and habitat conditions.

Is the Minister aware that the Parliamentary Secretary to the Taoiseach told me last week that the population of the migratory birds is down by about 300,000 over the last decade? Should there not be further restrictions?

(Cavan): I do not think it necessarily means that the fall in numbers is due to any activities here.

The remaining questions will appear on tomorrow's Order Paper.
