Vol. 270 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Traffic Chaos.

4.

asked the Minister for Justice the action he intends taking to prevent a recurrence of the traffic chaos in the city and county of Dublin on the morning of 30th January, 1974; and the number of accidents which occurred on that occasion and details thereof.

Garda inquiries into the incidents that occurred in Dublin on the morning of 30th January are continuing. I would refer the Deputy to the statement that I issued about these incidents and I would like to say again that the most effective deterrent against this type of activity is full and speedy co-operation by the public with the Garda.

The Commissioner has reported that one serious accident occurred in Dublin city on that morning. The Garda investigation into the accident is not yet completed.

These occurrences were on the 30th January. The Minister tells us a month later that the investigations are still continuing. Can the Minister state when finality will be reached in the investigations of these very serious incidents?

The Deputy must know that it is impossible to state when Garda investigations into any particular incident will reach finality. They will reach finality when the investigations are completed; I cannot put it any other way.

When the Garda investigations have reached finality will the Minister issue the findings of the investigations?

I will follow the normal procedure. If there is to be a prosecution, a prosecution will be taken. If there is no prosecution, no statement will be issued.
