Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - School Fire Drill.

22.

asked the Minister for Education if he will make regulations to ensure that all school children are instructed in fire drill.

Mr. R. Burke

A comprehensive circular on fire precautions was issued to all schools in September, 1971, for the guidance of principal teachers in setting up a simple and efficient fire routine procedure. Principals were advised to consult the chief fire officer of the local fire authority on any matters regarding fire drills or problems of fire safety in schools.

Can the Minister say if the teachers are at present giving children education or guidance in this matter?

Mr. R. Burke

I would not be personally aware of the number of occasions on any particular day at any particular school when this was given.

I have heard that it has generally been discontinued.

Mr. R. Burke

I will take note of the Deputy's point of view and, if necessary, issue the circular at more frequent intervals.
