Vol. 271 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Night School Facilities.

24.

asked the Minister for Education if he is satisfied that all second and third level educational institutions are making adequate and satisfactory provision for all those wishing to attend them as night students.

Mr. R. Burke

This matter will be subject to review in connection with consideration of the Report of the Committee on Adult Education in Ireland and the observations received from various interested groups, and organisations in relation to the recommendations made in the report, and proposals for an expansion in the future provision for such education both in the short term and the long term.

Is the Minister satisfied that the present position in this regard is satisfactory?

Mr. R. Burke

I am not but when the question of the adult education report has been finally disposed of I hope we will see an improvement in the provision for these people. If the Deputy would await our decisions on the adult education report he probably would see an improvement in the situation.

Far be it from me to appear to be impetuous on this matter but could the Minister give me any indication when this consideration is likely to be completed and when an improvement in the situation can be expected?

Mr. R. Burke

I used be prone to giving dates for certain things but with greater experience I now find it is not wise to do so. I can assure the Deputy that no undue delay will occur in dealing with this matter.

Will the Minister keep in mind in his examination of the situation and the report and in the taking of any decision that people in the community who seek to further their education by being night students are at their own expense seeking to improve their educational equipment, that they are worthy of every possible consideration and are not, as in some cases happens, to be treated as necessary nuisances by educational institutions?

Mr. R. Burke

I agree with the tenor of the Deputy's supplementary.
