Vol. 271 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Armed Robberies.

18.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of armed robberies that have taken place from 14th April, 1973, to the latest date for which figures are available.

The information available relates to robberies in which firearms were used. The number of such robberies in the period from 14th April, 1973 to 11th March 1974 was 98.

Can the Minister state how this compares with the previous years?

I have not that information.

Deputy Briscoe who put down the question could not be present due to an appointment. All of us are concerned about the increase in crimes of violence, particularly armed robberies. Has the Minister any information about the numbers apprehended and the amount of money stolen and recovered? Is the Minister aware of the great public concern about the increase in crime?

I am aware of public concern. I have not comparable figures for a comparable year but I have figures for the year ended 30th September, 1972, when the number of armed robberies was 132. The Deputy will see there has been a substantial decrease.

I am calling Question No. 19.

I hope the Minister is not taking some satisfaction at the figures. I am sure the Minister considers 98 robberies a serious matter.

I agree with Deputy Andrews that it is serious but the point I wanted to make was that while the position is serious there has been a substantial improvement since 1972. I might add that the incidence of armed robberies and violent crimes has nothing to do with the nature of the Administration in office for the time being.

The Minister must accept some responsibility.

I am calling Question No. 19.
