The Minister has said that 94 peace commissioners have been appointed since the 14th January. Would I be correct in saying that in reply to another question of mine I was informed that from the 1st April, 1973, to the 14th January this year, approximately 420 peace commissioners were appointed? This makes a total of 514 appointments since the 1st April of last year. Can the Minister give the reasons for these appointments?

If the Deputy would read the Courts of Justice Act he would be aware that the Minister for Justice may from time to time by warrant under his hand appoint and approve such and so many fit and proper persons as he shall think expedient and that these shall be called peace commissioners.

How many peace commissioners were appointed as a result of requests from the Garda in the areas concerned?

That is a separate question.

I have not got that information.

Is it not a question of a request being made by the Minister to the Garda?

I can tell Deputy Meaney that in the vast majority of the cases of the appointments in question checks were made with the local Garda and, on being informed that the people concerned were suitable and that the appointments were desirable and in the public interest, the appointments were made.
