Vol. 271 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water Rent Remission.

15.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will introduce regulations whereby old age pensioners and other social welfare recipients will qualify for remission of water rent as in the case of rates.

Under the existing statutory provisions it is entirely a matter for each county council to fix the charges to be made by them for the supply of water for any purpose, including domestic purposes.

I understand that Cork County Council, do, in fact, make a reduced water charge in the case of widows, old age pensioners and those in receipt of social welfare benefits.

Is there an official in each county council to carry out this work?

There is, and I would not like to take away from the local authorities powers which they have.
