Vol. 272 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Density.

25.

asked the Minister for Local Government the changes that have been made in recent years with reference to the control of housing density; and the Government's policy on this matter.

I am not sure what changes the Deputy has in mind. So far as housing densities generally are concerned, control is a matter for planning authorities with due regard to the relevant provisions in their development plans. The maximum densities specified may vary not only between different planning districts but also between areas within the same planning district. My approval is not required for the making or variation of a development plan.

As regards local authority housing, the densities adopted in individual schemes are decided by the local authorities. I have made it known however that I expect that in the design of housing schemes environmental aspects will be given greater attention than in the past and that there will be adequate provision for open spaces, landscaping and community facilities generally. This policy will no doubt involve a decrease generally in local authority housing densities.
