Vol. 272 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electrical Disturbances.

49.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when he proposes to make regulations in order to deal with electrical disturbances which are caused by fluorescent lighting, portable tools, et cetera.

As I indicated to the Deputy on 12th July, 1973 in reply to a similar question, regulations were made over ten years ago to deal with interference caused by small electric motors of the type used in portable tools, household electrical appliances, et cetera. I propose to make regulations dealing with interference caused by fluorescent lighting when standards in this regard are laid down by the EEC.

Is the Minister satisfied that the regulations will be enforceable? Will it be done at the manufacturing end or by the individual householder?

I have no reason to doubt that they will be enforceable. As I say, before drawing up the regulations we are waiting for the standards to be laid down by the EEC.
