Vol. 272 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Microbial Fermentation.

31.

asked the Minister for Finance the action the Government proposes to take with regard to the reports which it has received from the Science Policy Research Centre at UCD and the working party on microbial fermentation set up by the National Science Council.

The Deputy is presumably referring to work undertaken by the Science Policy Research Centre at UCD under contract for the National Science Council. Three reports have been submitted to, and published by, the council as part of the first phase of this work, which is still continuing. The reports are providing the council with a valuable input to its work of formulating a national science policy and a related programme of action.

As a first step towards the implementation of the recommendations of the working party on microbial fermentation, the National Science Council have set up a broadly based panel to examine research in the fine chemicals sector. The council are considering the further steps to be taken arising out of the working party's report.
