Vol. 273 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin School Transport Scheme.

45.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the shortage of accommodation in suburban post-primary schools, he will consider extending the benefits of the free school transport scheme to children failing to qualify for admittance to local schools who wish to attend centre city schools where, due to a reduction in population, places may be available.

The question of accommodation at second-level schools in Dublin is being kept constantly under review by the Dublin Advisory Council, and I am satisfied that all children seeking places in second-level schools in the Dublin area next September will be accommodated. The extension to Dublin city and suburbs of the free transport scheme applicable to pupils living in remote rural areas would not be warranted.

Does the Minister not agree that the situation regarding the attendance of these school-children at Dublin secondary schools in particular makes it all the more necessary for the Government to give some urgent attention to settling the bus dispute in Dublin?

That is a separate matter and quite irrelevant.
