Vol. 273 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teachers' Pensions.

46.

andMr. Faulkner asked the Minister for Education if he is yet in a position to convey his decision on the submissions made in respect of pensions for reverend sisters teaching in primary schools which have changed from the capitation to the classification system.

The question of reckoning for pension purposes service given by religious as members of the minimum staffs of national schools paid under the capitation system is the subject of a claim which was submitted by the Irish National Teachers' Organisation for discussion at the conciliation council for teachers.

The matter is still under negotiation at the conciliation council. In the circumstances it would not be appropriate for me to make any comment on it at this stage.

Would the Minister accept, in view of the anxiety of the sisters in question, that he might agree to announce his decision as quickly as possible?

As I indicated in my reply, this is essentially a matter for recommendation for the conciliation council and is still under negotiation at that level. Until such time as the council makes its recommendations, it would not be appropriate for the Minister to make an announcement or give an indication of his views.
