Vol. 273 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Remedial Education.

47.

asked the Minister for Education whether he intends to have a diploma awarded by the NCEA to teachers who have completed a course in remedial education.

It is not proposed that the Department of Education should make an application to the NCEA for the award of a diploma by that body to teachers who complete the required official course in remedial education.

48.

asked the Minister for Education the steps he is taking to exclude from the teacher quota those teachers who are engaged in remedial teaching for a minimum of 15 hours per week.

The circumstances of schools employing remedial teachers are given special consideration in connection with the question of determination of the number of teachers on the staff to whom remedial salary may be paid.

49.

asked the Minister for Education when his Department's list of equipment recommended for use in remedial teaching will be circulated to schools.

A list of material recommended for use in remedial education in secondary schools will be circulated to all such schools within the next few days.

Will the Minister indicate what grant is available for the purchase of this equipment?

I have no information as to the amount of grant available or whether an extra grant will be available. The question merely asked when the list will be circulated to schools.

Will the Minister convey to his colleague, the Minister for Education, that it is not much good circulating a list of equipment to schools if the schools are not in a position to buy that equipment. I understand that the grants available are totally inadequate.

The Deputy may take it that it would not be my colleague's wish to circulate a list if it were not possible for the schools to purchase the items on it.
