Vol. 273 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Malicious Damage Legislation.

65.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the escalation of malicious damages claims arising out of bomb damage and incendiarism, he proposes to introduce legislation to make such claims a national charge.

As announced during the weekend, the Government have decided that the Exchequer will recoup in full the cost to local authorities of malicious injuries to property which are caused by the use of explosives and are attributable to the disturbances in Northern Ireland. The arrangements to give effect to this decision do not require legislation and are a matter for the Minister for Local Government.

The question of an amendment of the law relating to malicious injuries in general is a separate matter and I am not yet in a position to make any statement about it.
