Vol. 273 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Flats.

75.

asked the Minister for Local Government if it is proposed to introduce legislation to ensure that rented flats in the Dublin city area will conform to certain basic standards of good housing practice.

Local housing authorities are empowered under section 70 of the Housing Act, 1966, to make bye-laws on the 28th June, 1973. Dublin Corporation have submitted amendments to the model for my approval and these are being examined in my Department.

In his examination of revised regulations would the Minister give further consideration to the whole concept of the changing pattern of urban life and would he consider providing such accommodation for single people?

I know that at the present time in this city there is a considerable shortage of suitable accommodation for business girls and men who are single. I would personally like to see a scheme through which accommodation would be rented to those people by local authorities.

At economic rents.

The State, since the change of Government, has always rented accommodation at fair and economic rents.
