asked the Minister for Local Government (a) the amount of money allocated from the Road Fund to each local authority in the current transitional financial period and in the two previous financial years and (b) the contribution from each local authority to the Road Fund in the last two financial years.

Note 1: Figures for year ended 31st March, 1974 are provisional and are still subject to final check.

Note 2: The proceeds of increased tax rates on cycles and private cars imposed by the Finance Act, 1966 and the Finance (No. 2) Act, 1970 and the proceeds of variations in road tax rates imposed by the Finance Act, 1973 are retained by the Exchequer and do not reach the Road Fund. The amounts given in the table are inclusive of Exchequer retentions. In the year 1972-73 the Exchequer retained £4,831,728 and in 1973-74 £8,183,000. The Road Fund was, however, supplemented by voted moneys to the extent of £2,400,000 in 1972-73 and £5,690,000 in 1973-74.

Note 3: The amounts given in the table do not include small sums in respect of licence fees in respect of appliances and structures for servicing vehicles which are collected by licensing authorities but are lodged direct to the Central Motor Tax Account for eventual inclusion in Road Fund receipts. The total sum for 1972-73 was £10,891 and for 1973-74 £7,629.
