Vol. 273 No. 5

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Pay Conditions.

77.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the grave disquiet among Garda sergeants in the Tipperary division regarding pay and conditions; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

78.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of dissatisfaction among middle ranks of the Garda Síochána in relation to pay and conditions; the action, if any, he intends to take; and if he will make a statement in the matter.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 77 and 78 together.

Pay and conditions of members of the Force up to and including the rank of chief superintendent are matters for negotiation under the Garda conciliation and arbitration scheme, which includes provision for determination of claims by an independent arbitrator in cases where agreement cannot be reached at conciliation.

Certain differences which arose recently between my Department and the Representative Body for Inspectors, Station Sergeants and Sergeants have, I am glad to say, been amicably resolved, as was indicated in a joint statement issued last week.
