Vol. 274 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wandering Horses.

41.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has any plans to deal with the menace caused by wandering horses in Dublin.

Mr. R. Burke

As the Deputy is aware, the problem caused by wandering horses in Dublin largely stems from the existence of areas of unfenced land belonging to the Dublin Corporation where horses are turned out to graze by their owners.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that during the past year the problem of wandering horses has considerably lessened in the Finglas area, where there had been a real problem. The Garda for their part will continue to do what they can to deal with horses found straying on public roads.

My question did not refer to Finglas, it referred to the position in Dublin as a whole. I hope that the Minister will do what was requested of the Department as far back as eight years ago and up-date legislation to deal with this menace?

Mr. R. Burke

I will draw the attention of the Minister to the point made by the Deputy.

Is the Minister aware that wandering horses trespass not only on open ground but occasionally cross cattle grids on to private property and would the Minister consider taking action against the owners of those horses or providing extra pounds?

Mr. R. Burke

I will draw the Minister's attention to that point as well.
