Vol. 274 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Airfields.

4.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he has any plans to provide an airstrip at the Valley, Achill, County Mayo.

I have no plans to provide an airstrip at Valley, Achill, County Mayo.

5.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he has sanctioned the extension of a runway at Castlebar airport, County Mayo.

This question has been under protracted examination. It seems to me that the only options open to the airport owners are either the removal of a gantry crane at Castlebar railway station or the diversion of the main Castlebar-Claremorris roadway. In the first case the operational advantage to be gained would be very limited and in the second case the cost of diverting the road would be prohibitive in relation to the existing or likely volume of air traffic. The question is still under examination and I will ensure that the technical advisory service of my Department will continue to be at the disposal of the owners.

6.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the up-to-date position regarding the provision of an airstrip for Clare Island, County Mayo.

An aeronautical officer of my Department carried out an inspection of the site proposed for an aerodrome on Clare Island in April, 1971, and his findings were conveyed to the promoters. I did not receive any subsequent proposals in the matter.
