Vol. 274 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Young People's Accommodation.

2.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will request local authorities in the larger cities to provide modern accommodation for young people who are forced to live away from home because of their employment or studies; and the subsidies which would be available for such development.

Housing authorities are encouraged to provide diversity in the types of housing accommodation built by them. In doing so, they must have regard to the primary objectives specified in section 60 of the Housing Act, 1966, which governs the letting of local authority dwellings. Any request for the payment of subsidy for the type of accommodation referred to by the Deputy would be considered in the light of progress made in meeting these objectives. An effective method of meeting the accommodation needs of such young people is to increase and improve the general housing stock where most of them will continue to find suitable accommodation.
