asked the Taoiseach if he will list the items included in the consumer price index which increased in price in the 12-month period to mid-May, 1974; and if he will state the percentage increases in each case, the total number of increases, the average percentage increase and the weight given to each item in the index.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the percentage change between mid-May, 1973 and mid-May, 1974, in the prices of the items covered by the consumer price index. Of the 367 items listed 357 showed an increase. The overall increase in the index during this period was 16.2 per cent.

The percentage expenditure weight for each item covered by the consumer price index is given in a detailed article on the index published in the March, 1969 issue, page 27, of the Irish Statistical Bulletin.
