Vol. 274 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Dual Carriageway.

23.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is in a position to state when work on the dual carriageway proposed for the Sarsfield Road area in Ballyfermot, Dublin will proceed.

I am not in a position to say when work on this project is likely to commence. The timing of the scheme is a matter for the Dublin Corporation in the first instance and would relate to such factors as the corporation's progress with the detailed planning of the scheme and its priority in relation to the funds available to the corporation for road improvement.

Is the Minister aware that the local authority have drawn up plans for this and have changed them on several occasions? Is there any way we can get finally to know exactly what route this proposed road will follow and then when it will start?

As Deputy Lemass is aware, I am a great believer in local authority members doing their own work. I suggest the members of Dublin Corporation could take a very decisive step in this by telling the officials exactly what they want.

Is the Minister aware that what the corporation say will happen this week is one thing but it might be a very different thing next week because they seem to take great delight in putting out new plans for roads of this nature?

The elected representatives are the people who should ensure that a decision is made and if it is made then it cannot be changed.

The National Coalition control the present city corporation. Perhaps we will get some action.

I am sure the new corporation will do a good job.
