Vol. 274 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Energy Policy.

41.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the direction that European energy policy strategy is likely to take; and the Irish Government's reaction to it.

The Commission of the European Communities have submitted a document to the Council of Ministers entitled "Towards a new Energy Policy Strategy for the European Community".

Preliminary consideration was given to the document at the meeting of the Council this week and it is expected to be discussed in greater depth at a Council of Energy Ministers which I will be attending later in the year. Meanwhile it would be premature to indicate the Government's reaction to it.

42.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power why the Government is proceeding with the erection of a nuclear power station before the potential of natural gas has been fully investigated.

A final decision has not yet been taken by the Government on the construction of a nuclear power station. Before such a decision is taken all relevant factors including the potential of natural gas will be taken into account.

Question No. 43 postponed.
